Workplace Safety Fine for Metal Recycling Firm

Following an August 2023 inspection, ASM Metal Recycling was fined £650,000 for not safeguarding workers – underscoring the serious risks of inadequate safety practices and the importance of proactive safety measures.

A recent case highlights the serious implications of inadequate safety practices. Following a routine inspection in August 2023, ASM Metal Recycling faced a £650,000 fine for failing to implement effective control measures to protect workers. Inspectors found unsafe practices at ASM’s Aylesbury site, including a lack of barriers between moving vehicles and workers manually sorting waste—an oversight that significantly raised the risk of collisions.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that, despite previous warnings and enforcement notices dating back to 2010, the company had not effectively addressed pedestrian-vehicle segregation. This failure underscores the importance of implementing and maintaining safety measures to prevent tragic accidents.

HSE’s inspector, Emma Page, noted that collisions between vehicles and pedestrians are one of the most serious risks in waste management, contributing to numerous fatalities each year. Let this serve as a reminder to all our clients about the importance of proactive risk assessments, consistent safety practices, and ongoing training to keep workplaces safe.

We didn’t take home the award this time but had a great evening celebrating all the great businesses in our local area.Team rhino at business awards

Winter Weather Safety Tips for keeping safe at Work

As winter approaches, surfaces can become hazardous, increasing the likelihood of slips and trips. Here are some quick tips to keep your workplace safe:

  • Lighting: Ensure well-lit walkways indoors and out to easily spot hazards.
  • Wet Leaves: Regularly clear leaves to reduce slip risks, especially in high-traffic areas.
  • Rainwater: Use slip-resistant paving, well-placed entrances, and absorbent mats to keep entryways dry.
  • Ice, Frost & Snow: Monitor temperatures, use grit, and consider coverings or barriers for slippery walkways.
  • Gritting: Apply grit before frost, ice, or snow is forecasted. Evening or early morning gritting is most effective.

By staying proactive, you can minimise seasonal risks and maintain a safe environment for all!
